Kalaw was established by the British during the Colonial Age as a hill station. The town covers a total area of 1,456km2 which is around 50km to the west of Inle Lake
According to the 2014 census, the total population of Kalaw is 186,083 people. The main ethnic groups in the town include Danu, Danau, Palaung, Pa-O, and Taung Yo people
At the altitude of 1,320m above the sea level, the weather in Kalaw is temperate all year round. The annual temperature here averages 20oC and the average rainfall is 1623mm
Kalaw was quite popular in the Colonial Rule as a holiday resort, especially among the British. Thus there have been existing even golf courses and driving ranges here
