The name Sapporo was taken from the Ainu language “sat poro pet”, which can be translated as “dry or great river”, a reference to the impressive Toyohira River.

In 2020, according to the census, Sapporo has a population of around 1.9 million people in a total area of 1,121.26 km2 (432.92 sq mi).
