Discover Amer Fort in Jaipur

About 20 minutes to the northeast of Jaipur's city center, Amer Fort (Amber Fort or Amber Palace) is a huge nostalgic monument in Rajasthan and also known as one of the sought-after and most-visited forts in India. Being a beautiful place that people don’t want to miss when travelling in Jaipur, Amer Fort, undoubtedly, features prominently on the list of the city's top attractions. The fort is located on a hill overlooking a serene and calm lake named Maota, which is the main source of water for the palace itself. Amer, a town with an area of 4 square kilometres, was once the capital of princely Jaipur state, hence the fort was the residence of its Rajput rulers and their families. The town of Amer and the Amer Fort were originally built by the Meenas, but later ruled by Raja Man Singh I. He started the current fort's construction in 1592 on the remains of an 11th-century fort then successive rulers added to Amber Fort other principal sections before moving the capital to Jaipur in 1727. Built of red sandstone and marble, the attractive and magnificent palace is laid out on four levels, each with a courtyard. Its architectural art is a notable fusion of Rajput (Hindu) and Mughal (Islamic) styles that made Amer Fort's impressive artistic elements with large ramparts, series of gates & cobbled paths, and loads of opulent imperial buildings with exquisite looks. The fort was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2013, as part of a group of six hillside forts in Rajasthan. Tourist can opt to walk uphill or take a ride on a jeep car, golf cart, or elephant back to reach the fort's entrance.
