As one of the famous mountaineering institutes of the world, the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI Darjeeling) is a premier organisation founded in 1954 to promote mountaineering as an organized sport like any other game in India. The idea of establishing the institute was initiated after the successful and historic climb of Mount Everest by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary in the year of 1953, to encourage the youth to take up the adventurous activity of mountaineering as a sport.
