Breakfast at hotel, a 1.5 hour drive north of Siem Reap will bring you to Phnom Kulen, which provides Siem Reap with water and dominates the skyline of the flat plains surrounding it. Although the highest peak of the mountain range lies at only 487m, Phnom Kulen has much to offer visitors. The Cambodian people regard the site as the birthplace of the ancient Khmer Empire. Visit the eight meter tall statue of a reclining Buddha and wash your hands at the Linga statue to purify your mind and body. Continue to visit the River of One Thousand Lingas and the magnificent waterfall close to it. Take a refreshing dip in the stream and pool of the waterfall.

On the way back, enjoy lunch in the garden Bong Thom House. Afterwards, visit the jewel of the Khmer art, Banteay Srei temple. Its red sand-stone walls are decorated with elaborate carvings in an amazing state of preservation.

Relaxation at Phnom Kulen Mountain

A playground for locals, Phnom Kulen (literally Mountain of the Lychees) is a gorgeous day out. The main attraction is the waterfalls at the top of Kulen Mountain and it’s also a great picnic spot; well set up in Cambodian style with hammocks and shelters to keep you shaded from the sun.Two sites most noted are the Thousand Lingas at Kbal Spean where you can see several thousand Lingas carved on the river bed, within the Kulen National Park site and Preah Ang Thom pagoda with its giant reclining Buddha which was carved out of a huge rock in 16th century. The area is a magnet to “kru khmer” (natural medicine doctors), and attracts people seeking blessings from its holy waters, particularly the potent life-giving waters at Kbal Spean, that are said to help couples conceive.Enjoy taking pictures and your expert guide will tell the story, the Linga-Cult. Once you are at the highest point of the area, you will feel why the ancient Khmer king built it on top of the mountain. Other than temples, visit here as a nature lover.

Diving deep into ancient ruins in Outlying Highlighted Temples

Located in the outskirt from Angkor Complex (Siem Reap), the outlying temples is delightfully secluded: a 35km ride to the rural area. In spite of the modest size, the outlying temples will amuse those wanders by the impressive details and fantastic carvings and ancient ruins from Hindu mythology, including the widely known Banteay Srei, Hariharalaya, Bakhong Temple. A must see sightseeings for all tourists.

Visit Wat Damnak, Beng Mealea Temple, Kampong Khleang & Tonle Sap Lake

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Wat Damnak, one of Siem Reap's most beautiful pagodas. The French colonial architecture reflects its history and serene-looking Buddhist statues positioned around the spacious grounds create a tranquil atmosphere. Bring candles and incense sticks to the pagoda to participate in a private blessing ceremony, performed by the resident monks. Sit on a hand-woven mat while the monks chant ritual blessings and sprinkle holy water (believed to offer good luck) before tying a sacred thread around your wrist. The monks will offer you a small keepsake to remind you of this special moment.

1.5 hour drive through the Cambodian countryside to reach the sprawling jungle temple of Beng Mealea, constructed in a distinctly Angkor Wat style by King Suyavarman II in the early 12th century, Beng Mealea preceded and may have served as a prototype for Angkor Wat. Today the temple is largely overrun by vegetation and the stone walls are crumbling which adds to its charm in a unique way. Accessibility has improved as elevated walkways have been set up throughout most of the temple, although to see all corners does require a sense of adventure as you will need to climb over stone blocks or walk through narrow passageways.

Visit floating village of Kampong Khleang, one of the largest settlements on the Tonle Sap Lake. Living on water is an art the Khmer people have mastered over the course of time. Board a local boat and visit a floating house where lunch is set up for you. Observe the local customs and talk with your hosts about the differences they face living on the water. Continue after lunch exploring the small island, which is home to a bustling market, a pagoda, a school and a health centre before returning to Siem Reap.

Fantastic jungle experience at Beng Mealea Temple

Beng Mealea or Bung Mealea is a temple from the Angkor Wat period. It is located 40 km east from the main group of temples at Angkor, Siem Reap, on the ancient royal highway to Preah Khan Kompong Svay. Beng Mealea was built as a Hindu temple, but some carvings depict Buddhist motifs. Its primary material is sandstone and it is largely unrestored, with trees and thick brush thriving amidst its towers and courtyards and many of its stones lying in great heaps. The history of the temple is unknown and it can be dated only by its architectural style, identical to Angkor Wat, so scholars assumed it was built during the reign of king Suryavarman II in the early 12th century. This site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List on September 1, 1992 in the Cultural category.Beng Mealea is largely unrestored and off the beaten path, with trees and brush thriving amidst its towers and courtyards. You can wander around a huge maze, looking at stones and columns lying in great heaps, and explored semi-collapsed tunnels. It is definitely not as many tourists as Angkor Wat!If you are a bit tired of Angkor & looking for an extraordinary place without tons of people, just head to Beng Mealea.

Siem Reap – one of the most popular destination of Cambodia has no shortage of unique charms — from Khmer classical ruins temples to a UNESCO World Heritage Angkor Wat— and it has been luring curious travelers more by the unique floating life in Tonle Sap Lake.
