Black House – Baan Dam Museum in Chiang Mai

Besides White Temple and Blue Temple, Back House (Baan Dam) is also a place worth visiting in Chiang Rai. It is the unique creation of national artist, Thawan Duchanee. In Thai, 'baan' means home or house and 'dam' means black. Part art studio, part museum, part home, Baan Dam is an eclectic mix of traditional northern Thai buildings interspersed with some outlandish modern designs. It is a collection of around 40 buildings of varying shapes and sizes dotted around a peaceful garden. The cluster of houses accommodates Thawan's collections of paintings, sculptures, animal bones, skins, horns, and silver and gold items from around the world.
