Apo Island, a marine sanctuary for sea turtles
If you’re after an incredible marine exploration or an awesome turtle experience, the volcanic island of Apo should definitely be on your itinerary. Situated just a short boat ride from Dumaguete in the Philippines, this tiny 74-hectare island is home to some of the best diving and snorkelling in the country thanks to its community-organized marine sanctuary established in 1985. With the heavy efforts of locals, the surrounding reefs of the island is now full of healthy soft and hard coral species and fish, and especially turtles! These turtles are also the main reason travelers go to Apo Island. Though not a nesting ground, the island is the feeding ground of green-sea and hawksbill turtles that a snorkeling or diving trip can let you see these amazing creatures in their natural habitat. You can take great shots of sea turtles but make sure you see them from a respectful distance.
