The ancient temple Banteay Srei is one of the most beautiful structures in the Angkor region that was built to worship the Hindu god, Shiva. The temple is located near Phnom Dei hill, 25km northeast of the ancient capital temple groups of Yasodharapura. Begun in the 10th century, the temple has now become the jewel of the Kingdom and is praised as the miniature of the Angkor Wat complex. Banteay Srei is famous for its elaborate decorative sculptures on the walls and constructed of red sandstone materials. The temple is also known as the ‘Citadel of the Women’ as the Cambodians believe that this small complex must have been built by women due to the masterpiece of elaborate carvings.
