Grand Mosque Baiturrahman
Best known as the pride of Banda Aceh, the Grand Mosque Baiturrahman is a dazzling mosque in Mughal revival style with brilliant-white walls, grand black domes and towering minaret. It was rebuilt in the 19th century by the Dutch as a conciliatory gift to the Acehnese after the original one burnt down. The mosque surprisingly survived after the 2004 earthquake and tsunami with minor damages and many residents believed it as direct intervention by the Divine. The Grand Mosque Baiturrahman is now a landmark of Banda Aceh and probably the epitome of many mosques in Indonesia.
