Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site - Leshan Giant Buddha
Regarded as the tallest Buddha statue all over the world, Leshan Giant Buddha is a grandiose ancient statue of red bed sandstones carved into the side of Lingyun Mountain in the southern part of Sichuan Province. Situating at the confluence of the Min River and Dadu River, the statue was built in the 8th century and faces Mount Emei with the rivers flowing below its feet. Despite sitting in a place of open air and humidity, the stone sculpture is so well-preserved throughout centuries due to its ingenious design, which is a delicate and invisible drainage system inside the statue playing an important role in protecting the Giant Buddha from corrosion. Leshan Giant Buddha is a famous Buddhist pilgrimage site which is included in almost itineraries in Sichuan, hence the place draws a lot of visitors all over the world every year. People can admire its architectural grandeur by following the narrow staircase up to the top to have a close-up look at the Giant Buddha or enjoying the boat excursion to witness the statue from a distance while on the rivers.
