It has the intimate connection to the Nguyen Dynasty, a feudal dynasty dominating much of southern Vietnam from the 17th to the 19th century.

You will see a lot of food stalls serving different local dishes like bun bo (beef noodle soup), banh khoai, banh beo, banh bot loc, bean puddings, clam rice, and so on.

If you love to see the lush countryside with vast rice fields, let’s head out to the suburb surrounding Hue. The first choice is the laid back village of Thuy Bieu nestled on the southern bank of the Perfume River, around 7km from Hue centre. This village is well-known for Thanh Tra - a speciality pomelo of Hue. Another option for cycling is Thuy Thanh village, 8km east of Hue city. This village is famous for its beautiful countryside settings, peaceful rural landscape and Thanh Toan tile-roofed bridge, a historical and cultural relic built in 1776 which is still intact nowadays.

If you’re looking for somewhere to get out into nature from Hue city, you will find Bach Ma National Park is an ideal haven for a day trip or short break. The park provides visitors with some unique trails through forests which do not require special hiking equipment. The first stop is Vong Hai Dai, the highest viewpoint on the top of Bach Ma mountain where you can admire the beautiful natural landscapes such as Lang Co beach, Canh Duong beach, Truoi lake, etc. Other popular spots are Ngu Ho (Five Lakes) and Do Quyen Fall (Rhododendron Fall). It is recommended to visit the park in March as the famous red Rhododendron simsii blossom along the small streams and Do Quyen Fall, which makes it a paradise for nature lovers.

"Bun Bo Hue (Hue beef noodle soup)"

Bun Bo Hue is the most popular dish in this city that you can see anytime in a list of what to eat in Hue. It is similar to Pho Bo a little but Bun Bo Hue is made from round thick noodles and the dish is a combination of sour, sweet and spicy. Various toppings include beef or pork knuckles, crab balls or meatballs, beansprouts. You should also expect congealed pig blood and some veggies, herbs like cilantro, lettuce, shredded banana blossoms, mint and basil. 

"Com Hen (Rice with Baby Clams)"

Com Hen is simply a dish of cooked rice with baby clams. You also see this food topped with crispy pork skins, shrimp paste, roasted peanuts, fresh greens and herbs. After boiled, baby clams are stir-fried with chopped onion, garlic, pepper, fish sauce and mint leaves. Mix everything up and enjoy a very characteristic flavour of Hue. In some restaurants, a bowl or plate of Com Hen is often served with some clam broth as well as shredded banana blossoms and bean sprouts.

"Banh Khoai"

Banh Khoai is a type of crispy pancake in Hue which is similar to Banh Xeo in the southern part of Vietnam but in a smaller and thicker version. Hue locals often use egg yolk to make the dish turn into yellow, unlike Banh Xeo which is dye yellow by turmeric powder; and the cake also becomes spongy when fried. Banh Khoai is served with fresh greens and herbs, and a few slices of star fruit, and sour bananas. The dipping sauce is specially made of pig liver, minced meat, roasted peanuts and sesame.

"Banh Beo Hue"

Banh Beo Hue is a type of steamed rice cake which can be found easily at any restaurant, eatery or street vendors in alleys. This delicious dish is made from a rice flour batter and cooked in small ceramic saucers. After steamed, these saucers are served on a larger plate and topped with shrimp paste, deep-fried pork rind, shallots and fresh herbs. The dipping sauce accompanying with Banh Beo Hue is a combination of fish sauce and red chillies but it is not too salty yet quite sweet.

"Banh Bot Loc "

Banh Bot Loc is a popular savoury cake in Hue and around the country which anytime mentioned will make people think about Hue. This dish is made from tapioca starch, filled with marinated shrimp and minced pork. Each cake is wrapped and tied in oiled banana leaves before steamed until cooked. The best way to enjoy this cake is by using your hands to unwrap the leaf, dip the cake in sweet chilli fish sauce and feel the local taste of the cake. You can easily savour Banh Bot Loc from the streets and alleys of Hue along with other famous cakes.
