"Visit the Complex of Hue Monuments"

Associated with Vietnam’s last royal dynasty, the Nguyen Dynasty, and inscribed as a UNESCO-listed site in 1993, this significant territory remains hundreds of monuments and ruins including the Forbidden Purple City, the Imperial City, royal tombs (Minh Mang, Tu Duc, Khai Dinh, etc), pagodas, temples, flag tower, library and museum. Most places are maintained intact with basic architectural and landscape features, which makes them great attractions for architecture and history seekers.

Running through the centre of Hue, the Perfume River is one of the most famous landmarks in the city. The best way to explore the natural beauty of the Perfume River is taking a leisurely boat trip along the river. Now there are many boat tours operating over the river that stops at popular tourist sites such as Thien Mu pagoda, Hon Chen temple or Minh Mang mausoleum, you just need to hop on a boat, simply relax in the seat and admire the fantastic views. Another romantic idea is to stroll along the waterfront promenade along the river’s edge. At sunset, this place comes to life as little shops and eateries open and colourful lanterns are lit; here, you may want some shopping time and treat your stomach to some local street eats.

Savouring local food is one of the most relaxing and worth-trying things to do in Hue. If you’re wondering what and where to eat in Hue, let make a visit to Dong Ba market. Standing along the north bank of Perfume River, Dong Ba market is the oldest and biggest commercial centre in the area with a wide range of fruits, clothing, food, handicrafts and household appliances. If your purpose is food hunting, come to the market at around 3.00 pm and find the food court on the ground floor. You will see a lot of food stalls serving different local dishes like bun bo (beef noodle soup), banh khoai, banh beo, banh bot loc, bean puddings, clam rice, and so on.

"Explore Hue by bicycle"

Hue is one of the best cities in Vietnam to cycling around. You can easily hire a bike and make a ride around Hue’s classic streets to see how life is going on. If you love to see the lush countryside with vast rice fields, let’s head out to the suburb surrounding Hue. The first choice is the laid back village of Thuy Bieu nestled on the southern bank of the Perfume River, around 7km from Hue centre. This village is well-known for Thanh Tra - a speciality pomelo of Hue. Another option for cycling is Thuy Thanh village, 8km east of Hue city. This village is famous for its beautiful countryside settings, peaceful rural landscape and Thanh Toan tile-roofed bridge, a historical and cultural relic built in 1776 which is still intact nowadays. 

"Take a day trip to Bach Ma National Park"

If you’re looking for somewhere to get out into nature from Hue city, you will find Bach Ma National Park is an ideal haven for a day trip or short break. The park provides visitors with some unique trails through forests which do not require special hiking equipment. The first stop is Vong Hai Dai, the highest viewpoint on the top of Bach Ma mountain where you can admire the beautiful natural landscapes such as Lang Co beach, Canh Duong beach, Truoi lake, etc. Other popular spots are Ngu Ho (Five Lakes) and Do Quyen Fall (Rhododendron Fall). It is recommended to visit the park in March as the famous red Rhododendron simsii blossom along the small streams and Do Quyen Fall, which makes it a paradise for nature lovers.

"Bun Bo Hue (Hue beef noodle soup)"

"Com Hen (Rice with Baby Clams)"

Com Hen is simply a dish of cooked rice with baby clams. You also see this food topped with crispy pork skins, shrimp paste, roasted peanuts, fresh greens and herbs. After boiled, baby clams are stir-fried with chopped onion, garlic, pepper, fish sauce and mint leaves. Mix everything up and enjoy a very characteristic flavour of Hue. In some restaurants, a bowl or plate of Com Hen is often served with some clam broth as well as shredded banana blossoms and bean sprouts.

"Banh Khoai"

Banh Khoai is a type of crispy pancake in Hue which is similar to Banh Xeo in the southern part of Vietnam but in a smaller and thicker version. Hue locals often use egg yolk to make the dish turn into yellow, unlike Banh Xeo which is dye yellow by turmeric powder; and the cake also becomes spongy when fried. Banh Khoai is served with fresh greens and herbs, and a few slices of star fruit, and sour bananas. The dipping sauce is specially made of pig liver, minced meat, roasted peanuts and sesame.

Banh Bot Loc is a popular savoury cake in Hue and around the country which anytime mentioned will make people think about Hue. This dish is made from tapioca starch, filled with marinated shrimp and minced pork. Each cake is wrapped and tied in oiled banana leaves before steamed until cooked. The best way to enjoy this cake is by using your hands to unwrap the leaf, dip the cake in sweet chilli fish sauce and feel the local taste of the cake. You can easily savour Banh Bot Loc from the streets and alleys of Hue along with other famous cakes.
