Restored ruins of Plaza Cuartel
One of the historical tourist destinations in Puerto Princesa, Plaza Cuartel was once a former military base with an old garrison and tunnels. It is notorious for the dark past as the site where 154 American prisoners of war were burned alive here by the Japanese on 14 December 1944 – what we know as the Palawan Massacre. Only 11 soldiers survived from the cuartel. Then turned into a public park, Plaza Cuartel now looks like an open-air war museum with several information panels that show the strategically important role of Puerto Princesa during the World War II. The park features towering trees and benches along the concrete pavements for a cool escape from the tropical heat. The rear end of Plaza Cuartel also offers a good view of the city bay.
