Traditional Dance of Tinikling
Tinikling is one of the most popular folk dances in the Philippines which originated during the Spanish colonial era - particularly in Leyte, one of the Visayan Islands. The traditional dance is named after the birds locally known as tikling (often referring to rail species), and imitates the movement of these birds as they walk on grass or dodge bamboo traps set by rice farmers. The perfomance involves the rhythmic clapping, tapping, and sliding bamboo poles on the ground and against each other while one or more dancers step over and in between the poles on timing with the beat. Considered a national dance in the Philippines, tinikling is commonly performed on Filipino festivals, at school or theater performances. Today, tinikling has spread across the globe, especially to the United States, where students learn it as an aerobic exercise for physical education classes and dancers keep the dance up-to-date with pop music.
